Just a brief note to say that, apparently, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is the best book that’s ever been written, and needs to go to the top of Gamma’s Lit Picks. After a two hour marathon reading session this afternoon, we finished, and Gamma wanted to immediately begin again! Gamma has also declared the book superior to the movie, and questions why they made the changes they did. Why aren’t the slippers silver, like in the story? Did you know the Tin Woodman used to be a real man? So many details left out that would have added to the story. No answers here, but apparently a life-long love of fantasy borne in a single book…
off to see the wizard…

Oh, this is “wonderful” just like the title.
And he picked a rich lode to tap, with more than a dozen books in line behind this one adding detail and definition and infinite re-reading opportunities to that world!
They’re all available in paperback in bright covers too. One Christmas we got them for Favorite Daughter and didn’t wrap them, just spread them out like a smorgasbord (or a fanned deck of cards) under the tree. So decorative and they look like a major present that way. Also Santa looked like he knew her VERY well!
And I just want to welcome Gamma into the fraternity of booklovers for life — once you become an indignant defender of any book as better than its movie, you’ve arrived as a true reader . . .
We’ve got the set on the way right now! I must confess I had never read this series myself — what a find!
